In 1999–2002, the Academy of Finland's Media Culture Research Programme researched media change as a cultural phenomenon at the turn of the century, focussing especially on the everyday media. As a central umbrella theme, the study of the everyday media was approached from many angles: from the point of view of the information society, from media history, health information, the economy, and so on. This book presents the various topics covered, as the leaders of the Media Culture Research Programme's research projects summarise the results of their projects and discuss the future of media culture research. What does the power of the media truly involve? Is media the producer or the medium of narratives? How do youth use the media? What are the factors driving the changes in the media economy? Why would we need a history of needs? How has new media become part of everyday life? What differing meanings are delivered to different user groups of information technology? Is the role of the media in health communication activating citizens, or rendering them passive?
