BRUMMER-KORVENKONTIO, Karl Artur (ARTTU)
(1891-1951) Interior Architect

Teacher of Composition 1919-51 and Art Director 1944-51 of the Central School of Applied Arts and the Institute of Industrial Art.

Arttu Brummer taught general composition, furniture design, heraldic design, and form theory.

Brummer was the central and leading personality of Finnish industrial art throughout his long teacher's career. He was simultaneously the Intendant of the Museum of Applied Arts and chairman of Ornamo in several periods of time. As teacher he was popular and highly esteemed. He raised the level of Finnish industrial art and gave the school and his students support and direction. Partly due to his influence Finnish design gained a larger international renown.

Brummer himself took part in the interior decorations of e.g. the Parliament building, the Post Office main building, Metsätalo, and the Atlas Banking House in Helsinki. He designed furniture, glass, and heraldry. His works can be seen in for instance the Museum of Applied Arts and the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki, where e.g. the Finlandia Bowl, a birthday gift to Sibelius, is kept. He has been characterized as a representative of classicism tinted with functionalism. Brummer stressed the importance of the command of an individual handicraft skill.

Brummer published a great number of articles (1915-51), even pungent ones, on various branches of industrial art.
