Flirting induces certain physical changes in both
sexes: muscle tone is increased, puches under the eyes disappear, the
chest expands and the stomach is drawn in.
When a woman joins a group of men, the men have
certain instinctive gestures, such as smoothing their hair or fingering
their ties. A more aggressively sexual signal is the 'cowboy stance':
the man hooks his thumbs under the belt, turns his body towards the
woman and pushes one foot forward. The eyes linger on her slightly
longer than usual. Alternatively, there is the 'akimbo' stance, hands on
the hips. If a man is sitting or leaning against a wall, you often
notice how they spread their legs slightly.
Women toss their head. The original impulse behind
the gesture is probably to shake hair from the eyes, although the
gesture is used also by women with short hair.
Showing your wrist or palm is a clear hint. Smokers
have many opportunities to play around with these gestures. Also,
blowing smoke upwards sends out a positive message.
When sitting, a woman can signal her willingness to
flirt by her posture. She may sit with one leg folded underneath her so
that the knee points towards the object of her interest. She may play
with her footwear, for example sliding the foot in and out of the shoe.
Some men find this gesture extremely provocative. A man's interest can
also be aroused by crossing your legs with exaggerated slowness.
