Working Nomad - 00:17:00 Workstation
A conceptual design project carried out by Marcus Arvonen at the university of art and design.

This is a study that looks in to the current situation of peopel that work mobile, The main goal in the project is to develope a short time workstation, for airports and other public areas like hotels and terminals.
A number of reserch events has been carried thru, dealing with different aspects of mobile work like funktion, estetics, technology, social, materials etc. Main Parts of the prototype work has been carried out in Helsinki/Finland. The reserch part has mainly bin carried out in Tokyo/Japan.

> Focus

This study will not solve all the possible situations that might occur in a temporary and mobile working situation, but try to find the caracteristic needs and funktions and that is desireble for users in a mobile working situation.
The focus in this study is on the interaction between user technology and space. The study will look in to use of tools as computer, mobilephone ,pdas, pen and papper.
There is numerous potential target enviroments for the project to be applied in, hotels, lounges, cafes, entrences. In this study ,the target enviroment is the airport environment. The airport has a big flow of mobile workers and the trawellers has to spend relativly long time in the terminal area before departure.

> Background

The starting point of this work is an interest in the development of traveling combined with office work. Today it is possible to sit anywhere on the globe and perform most of the traditional office work through new tools that easily can fit under your arm. Books, catalogues, typewriters, staplers, tape, rubbers, pens, papers trash bins, etc, have been transformed (during the last decade) into digital software that we can control by computer, phone, pda etc. Work in public and temporary places has developed, many peoples can see the advantage to transport themselvs at the same time as they can be in contact whit there colleague, and keep a work process running.
People are leaving the offices and they inhabit spaces that originally have not been designed for work. Terminals, trains, airports, hotels, these places are now reinterpretated into the Nomad worker^“s office. the intention with this work is to suggest how to controll these environments and objects to allow us to preform work in a more controlled way.

> Problem

Difficult to predict work space
A big problem for the people working on the move, is that they have difficulties to predict the resources and possibilitys that the next place will offer, network. electricity, privacy, accssability. Today there is no standard, all airports have there individual aproach and motivation to support resourses for the mobile workers.

Non-funktional solutions
Co-ordination of resources in spaces is often a big problem, for exampel. Electricity contacts are placed in the corner of the room. intenet accsess is limited or controlled with charge. Light and visual information is randomly placed. Working surfaces are limited or nonexisting. Lack of private space interfers with the integrity and possibility to consentrate.

Need to controll
These factors creates a practical insertenty for the user. Even though we are supported by high and low tech gadgets that gives us possibility to perform work and communicate in different ways. There is a need to improve the space and resourses that the mobile workers use. It is nessecary for the workers to reach out to resources, like internet, electricity, and physical-private working space, this would give the possibility to predict the working process in a more controlled way.

> Goals

> To Understand the needs of the growing group of mobile workers.
> To Improve the worksituation for the mobile worker.
> Make Easy to apply/understand/use, move, repar or replace the workstation.

> Results

The result of the project is a group of objects that suggests how to support the mobile worker in the working process at the airport. The airport can with a resonabul investment offer working spots thar provides a individual working surfase network connection and electricity for the temporary work situation.
The design of the workstation provides a flexibul position whit a possibility to slightly rotate and work on both sides. the ergonomical propertys is considerd mainly from two aspects, time and activity. The physial size of the object contributes to the feeling of a private area. big enough to create a temporary ^”room^‘ for the user.

Appying the result

This project is focusing on the professional mobile worker. this means that the user/worker has a developed idea of where the work should take place. there are manny target areas whitin the airport here follows a selection from the possible areas in Arlanda airport,

Primepoint/conference center

In Arlanda airport and manny others airports there are good conferenc centers where people arrive from different countries, and directly meet up at the airport conferense. The need of doing small activitys like calling mailin taking notes etc, are big, before and after a meeting when decitions are going to be mande or just have bin made.

Gate 52 copenhagen

The area after passing the security check. Here people just wahit for the boarding to the airplane.
Sas lounge
There are numerus amount of lounges that often are included in the Bussnis class ticket, This is an atractive space for this cocept, even though the acessability is reduced by the fact that you have to be a lounge member or pay a fee to enter the area.
